Road to Wimbledon: Murray downs Versdaco to reach QFs, but Muller ends Dimitrov’s Defence

TulipsAndy Murray moved comfortably into the QFs of Queens, with a straight sets win over Fernando Verdasco. The former 3 times Champion always seemed to have the edge over the Madrid native. Even though Murray’s form dipped slightly in the first set, the British No1 never looked like the match. His opponent in the QFs will be Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller, who knocked out defending Queens Champ: Grigor Dimitrov. Muller, a grass-court veteran using his experience to beat the young Bulgarian in 2 sets.

ATP Queens: Day 4, 2nd rd

Murray bt Verdasco: 7-5, 6-4

Andy Murray continued his quest for a record-tying 4th Queens title, easily coming through against Fernando Verdasco.

Murray of course has long been consistently good on grass, whilst Verdasco has gotten better ion the last few years. The only other time that they’ve met on grass was in the Wimbledon QF 2 years ago. Murray famously came back from 2 sets to love down and went on to win Wimbledon for the first time.

But thankfully for Murray this match was nothing like their epic SW19 encounter.

Murray got off to quick start in the first set, winning the first few games, before Verdasco caught back up. But come the crunch time, Andy took control and edged Fernando in the end by 7-5.

Neither player would budge in the 2nd set, but yet again Andy upped the pressure in the crucial moments. Serving to stay in the match down 5-4, Verdasco would crumble and Murray would break one final time, to take the victory by 6-4.

Murray will now face Luxembourg veteran Gilles Muller in the last 8.

Muller played brilliantly to oust defending champ Grigor Dimitrov, also in straight sets.
